Fuji's FinePix HS50EXR - Fine All-rounder Camera

Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR is styled like a DSLR camera, has manual control over the zoom, and sports a versatile 24 - 1,000mm range (35 mm equiv.). Additional likeable features are a sharp EVF, very useful vari-angle rear display, and a good control layout making this 16-megapixel manual zoomer a solid choice for photographers who would like to photograph a wide selection of motives. Its another strength is very snappy hybrid-based AF. As for the IQ, HS50EXR does well at lower ISO settings but its images suffer when shooting at ISO 800 or higher due to the small built-in sensor.

Bottom line: A fine all-rounder camera for those who dig deeper than just using its EXR mode. Though big and bulky at first sight, it proves to be operationally swift, responsive and enjoyable companion.

Panasonic DMC-FZ1000 In Test – Somehow Underrated Camera

A) Initial impressions

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 looks like a splendid still and video camera thanks to its big, Sony-derived 1-inch sensor, excellent Leica branded 25-400 mm lens and 4K recording capability.

Camera enables very good image quality even at higher ISOs. Its AF system employing the Panasonic’s own DFD technology results in a very fast and also mostly accurate autofocus. It is capable of 12 fps burst shooting, 7 fps with autofocus between the frames. Its vari-angle LCD enables even the most awkward shooting angles. Kudos also to very clear and sharp EVF which is a joy to work with. Surely one of the best in the business.

As for the handling, FZ1000 is a big camera. But as I’ve been well-trained by using equally big Fujifilm HS50 EXR, handling of the FZ1000 represents no problem at all. In addition, it sports a nice grip, so it feels secure in hand. If only Panasonic would provide a weather sealing. Mind you, it’s the same wish new owners of the FZ2000 would express ;)

Looking forward to continue the testing. :)

B) FZ1000 Added to the lineup

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised while testing the camera. It proved to be very manageable in hands with its comfortable grip, its AF was functioning very fast and in majority of cases reliably, and the setting menu incorporated was easy to follow and to change the values.

I found this camera have a tendency to overexpose here and there, so in order to avoid blown highlights I brought the exposure down -1/3 to 2/3 Ev. Looks like the -1/3 Ev value is to be used permanently on this camera. In addition, I will need to bring some "Zebra pattern function" around to have my settings right before the shot. ;)
